Positioned amidst the Toy Factory Lofts just a few doors down from Belgian cafe Little Bear, the curiously luxurious Downtown Design League boutique would be easy to miss. But those who luck upon double-taking into its floor-to-ceiling glass windows will spy a sophisticated retail space, featuring handcrafted clothing, shoes, leather goods and accessories, all of which are locally made. Downtown Design League’s creative team are palpably focused on their philosophy of creating luxury goods with both love and artistry. The atelier is open 12pm–8pm Tuesday - Saturday, but appointments are also available for those who’d like to discuss crafting their own custom Angeleno-made suede shoe, for example.

INSPIRATIONPOINT

From their downtown Los Angeles atelier, designers CÁDIZ+REAL are crafting baby shoes that evoke a time when a child's first pair of shoes was a treasured keepsake. using artisanal techniques, the 4-year-old brand's sophisticated leather styles are the antithesis of mass production. And for their limited-edition collection, launching in spring, CÁDIZ+REAL experimented with organic forms and raw textures. The duo, who also oversee the Downtown Design League women's brand, offer a glimpse into their creative process.

"Moving from New York's West Village to LA's Arts

light plays off different surfaces."

"We took a lot of inspiration from nature,

and the wrinkled surface of black peppercorns."
